Town of Ruston Flag Design
As a project for my Symbols & Marks class, I researched and developed a flag design for Ruston, LA.
My flag design is a collection of four arcs and a concave star centered on a field of deep blue. The symbolism in the flag is representative of the ideals and beliefs held dear by all citizens of Ruston. Each of the colors in the design represent an ideal. The red arc represents loyalty. Ruston is full of loyal friends, fans (go dawgs!), and families. The yellow arc beside the red represents fellowship. Ruston is known for its rich hospitality and welcoming people. They are always ready for the next dinner out on the town with friends, downtown festival, or church service where they can visit with others. The arc of green represents growth, both personal and environmental. Personal growth is important to many citizens of Ruston. We value education, spiritual enrichment, and self-improvement. Our city fosters the growth of all its’ citizens regardless of income, color, background, or beliefs. The other side of the green is representational of the environmental growth in Ruston. Ruston is full of beautiful parks, open green spaces, and farmland. It is also representational of the commitment to environmental protection that Ruston has proposed for the future.
The final arc is blue to represent compassion. Our citizens are committed to lending a helping hand to the less fortunate. In times of peril and disaster, we have seen the best come out in our friends, neighbors, and leaders. We are there to support our fellow citizens wherever they may need it. The dark blue background is perhaps one of the most important colors because it represents the entirety of Ruston’s history. From the founding of the town, establishment of the railroad and university, to the present day, Ruston has grown tremendously. We have such a rich history full of monumental people, events, and more that have made Ruston what it is today. Last but not least, the concave star represents hope for the future of Ruston. Our beliefs and ideals are what will push us toward the glimmering promise of the future.
